Illegal dump site operators face prosecution over pollution threat to Weija Dam
Authorities in the Ga South Municipality have initiated legal proceedings against individuals operating an unauthorised waste disposal site near the Densu River system, following concerns over its potential impact on the Weija Dam and surrounding environment.
The Assembly Member for Ngleshie Amanfro, Joseph Kobina Fiamor, said the case is currently before the court after repeated efforts to halt the dumping activities failed to produce the desired results.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, Mr Fiamor explained that complaints from residents prompted him to engage municipal authorities to investigate the matter. Subsequent inspections confirmed that waste was being deposited at a site located along the riverbanks, prompting intervention by the Municipal Chief Executive and environmental health officials.
According to him, operators of the facility were initially directed to cease operations, but continued dumping led the assembly to pursue legal action.
He noted that enforcement measures implemented by the municipality have significantly reduced activities at the site while the case proceeds through the judicial process.
The development follows growing concerns over pollution within the Densu River catchment area. A recent investigation revealed that refuse dumped at the location eventually finds its way into the Ja River before flowing into the Densu River and ultimately the Weija Dam.
Environmental experts have long warned that pollution within the catchment area threatens water quality and places additional pressure on treatment facilities. The Weija Dam remains one of the principal sources of potable water for thousands of residents across the Greater Accra Region.
Mr Fiamor assured residents that the assembly remains committed to protecting the municipality’s water resources and enforcing environmental regulations against offenders.
However, concerns persist among some residents, who claim waste collectors continue to transport refuse to the area using tricycles despite the ongoing court action.
The allegations have renewed calls for stricter monitoring of the site and stronger enforcement measures to prevent further contamination of the river system and safeguard the long-term sustainability of the Weija Dam.
