The Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has rejected suggestions that former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo stepped down from the Council of State in protest over the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, June 15, he described the claims as speculative and not supported by any official statement from Sophia Akuffo.
He stressed that there was no factual basis for linking her resignation to the removal of Justice Torkornoo, and urged the public to avoid attributing motives without evidence.
Kwakye Ofosu said government had examined the resignation letter and found no reference to the controversy surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s dismissal.
He further noted that Sophia Akuffo is known for being forthright and principled, arguing that if her decision had been influenced by the issue, she would have stated it clearly.
“It is most unfair to ascribe motives to her when she has not communicated same,” he said, adding that the government had received no indication in her resignation letter suggesting any connection.
Former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was removed from office on September 1, 2025, through a constitutional process that sparked public debate and divided opinion among legal experts, civil society groups, and political commentators.
Sophia Akuffo’s subsequent resignation from the Council of State has since fuelled speculation, with some attempting to draw a link between the two developments, though officials insist there is no evidence to support such a connection.
