The family of Lionel Messi has confirmed that his father, Jorge Messi, is currently facing a health issue and is receiving medical care.
In a statement released on Thursday, the family said Jorge Messi remains under medical supervision and is recovering well, with his condition showing positive progress.
The clarification follows widespread speculation about his health after Messi became emotional during Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening World Cup match earlier this week. The 38-year-old captain scored a hat-trick in the game, drawing level with Miroslav Klose as the joint-highest scorer in World Cup history.
Speaking after the match, Messi explained that his tears were unrelated to football.
“I went through some difficult days, but I am thankful to the entire delegation and my teammates for their support and strength during that period,” he said.
Addressing the rumours, the Messi family expressed disappointment over what they described as a lack of sensitivity and respect regarding a private family matter.
They stressed that only close relatives have accurate information about Jorge Messi’s condition and urged the public not to rely on unverified reports or statements that do not come directly from the family.
The statement also called for responsibility, discretion and respect for the family’s privacy, emphasizing that a person’s health should not become the subject of speculation or irresponsible media attention.
The family thanked supporters for their messages of concern and goodwill while requesting that Jorge Messi’s privacy and that of his relatives be respected during his recovery.
Argentina will continue their World Cup campaign against Austria on June 22 before facing Jordan in their final group-stage match on June 28.
