Three people have lost their lives and nine others suffered gunshot injuries following a renewed attack on Odomi, a community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.
The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, June 18, when armed assailants, whose identities remain unknown, reportedly invaded the community amid ongoing tensions in the area, causing fear and confusion among residents.
The injured were transported to the Nkwanta St. Joseph Catholic Hospital for medical treatment.
According to hospital officials, one of the victims later died while receiving care, while two others were brought to the facility dead after reportedly being attacked on their farms.
Authorities have not yet established the motive behind the attack or identified those responsible.
In response, security agencies, supported by military personnel, have increased patrols in and around affected communities in an effort to maintain order and prevent further violence.
The attack comes just days after the Oti Regional House of Chiefs announced plans to set up a seven-member committee to help find a lasting solution to the long-running conflict in the municipality.
The committee, which is yet to be formally inaugurated, is expected to engage stakeholders and propose measures aimed at restoring peace and addressing the recurring unrest.
Residents have meanwhile called on the government and security agencies to enhance protection in vulnerable communities as efforts continue to stabilize the area.
Stakeholders have yet to comment publicly on the latest incident.
