Three students have been killed and seven others wounded after two teenagers allegedly opened fire at a high school in Tacloban City, authorities in the Philippines have confirmed.
Police said the suspects, aged 14 and 15, were taken into custody following the shooting at San Jose National High School. One of the teenagers was apprehended shortly after the attack, while the second later surrendered to law enforcement officers.
Investigators are examining reports that the violence may have stemmed from tensions linked to bullying, although officials say inquiries are still ongoing and no final conclusions have been reached regarding the motive.
The shooting has stunned residents of Tacloban, where incidents of this nature are considered extremely rare. Local police officials noted that the city has not experienced a school shooting of this scale in recent memory.
According to preliminary findings, the suspects were armed with a revolver and a pistol. Authorities are now working to determine how the weapons came into the teenagers’ possession.
The seven injured students were rushed to hospital for treatment. Officials have not yet released detailed updates on their conditions.
The incident has reignited debate over firearm security in households. Police urged gun owners to ensure weapons are properly stored and kept out of the reach of children.
Families of the victims have also demanded accountability, with relatives questioning how minors were able to gain access to firearms used in the attack.
The Philippines’ education authorities expressed concern over the tragedy and called for support for affected students, staff and families as the community mourns the loss of the victims.
Security patrols have been intensified across Tacloban as investigators continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. Authorities say further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
