A legal battle has erupted between two of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies after Novo Nordisk accused rival Eli Lilly of misleading consumers in advertisements promoting its weight-loss and diabetes treatments.
Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic and Wegovy, has filed a lawsuit in the United States alleging that Eli Lilly’s marketing campaigns unfairly portray its medicines as more effective than competing products.
At the centre of the dispute are comparisons involving Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Zepbound drugs and Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy treatments. Novo claims the advertisements relied on comparisons that did not reflect the latest approved dosages of its medicines, creating what it describes as an inaccurate picture of their relative effectiveness.
The Danish drugmaker argues that patients should receive information based on current scientific evidence and is seeking a court order that would force Eli Lilly to withdraw the advertisements and issue corrective messaging.
Eli Lilly has rejected the allegations, insisting its advertising is backed by scientific research and accurately reflects the findings of clinical studies.
The lawsuit adds another chapter to the growing rivalry between the two pharmaceutical giants, which are competing for dominance in the rapidly expanding global market for weight-loss drugs, a sector expected to generate tens of billions of dollars in the coming years.
The case is expected to draw close attention from both the healthcare industry and regulators as competition intensifies in one of the pharmaceutical sector’s fastest-growing markets.
