Dozens of families in the Yendi Municipality are seeking shelter after a violent storm swept through parts of the area, destroying more than 40 homes and leaving a 12-year-old girl dead.
The overnight storm, which struck on Wednesday, July 22, caused extensive damage in several communities, particularly Meindogu, where residents woke up to collapsed buildings, torn-off roofs and ruined belongings.
The victim, identified as Asana, reportedly died after a room she was sleeping in collapsed during the storm. Her mother, Awabu Abukari, said the family had been asleep when strong winds tore through their home.
Residents said household items, food stocks and farm produce were also lost in the disaster, forcing many affected families to rely on relatives and neighbours for temporary accommodation.
Officials from NADMO have begun assessing the damage, while local leaders are appealing for emergency support, including food, clothing and building materials for displaced residents.
