Court ruling on Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu appeal could determine fate of former MASLOC boss

Former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu is expected to learn today whether she will continue serving a 10-year prison sentence or secure a legal breakthrough in her long-running corruption case.

The Court of Appeal is scheduled to deliver judgment on her challenge against a conviction that followed her trial over the alleged misappropriation of state resources during her time at MASLOC.

Tamakloe-Attionu was found guilty by an Accra High Court in 2024 on charges including causing financial loss to the state and stealing. The conviction came after proceedings that continued in her absence while she remained in the United States.

Her lawyers have argued that both the charges and the process leading to her conviction were flawed. They contend that the offences were improperly framed and have questioned the legality of trying and sentencing her after she failed to return to Ghana.

The former MASLOC chief left Ghana in 2021 for medical treatment in the United States with the permission of the court but did not return to continue the trial. She was later extradited and brought back to Ghana in June this year before being transferred to the Nsawam Medium Security Female Prison to begin serving her sentence.

Today’s ruling is expected to provide clarity on whether the conviction will stand, be overturned, or result in further legal proceedings.
