Liverpool have entered a new chapter in their ownership story after a consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos acquired a significant shareholding in the Premier League champions.
While initial reports suggested the investor group had purchased roughly one-third of the club, details emerging after the agreement indicate the stake is closer to 40%, making it one of the most substantial investments in Liverpool since Fenway Sports Group (FSG) took control in 2010.
The transaction sees 1892 Holdings become a major shareholder in the Anfield club. The investment group brings together several high-profile business figures, including Bezos, British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
Although FSG remains in control for now, the agreement reportedly includes a pathway that could allow the consortium to increase its influence in the future. The investors have secured an option to pursue a controlling stake within the next year, potentially paving the way for a significant shift in Liverpool’s ownership structure.
The development is notable not only because of the size of the investment but also because of the calibre of the individuals involved. Bezos is one of the world’s wealthiest entrepreneurs, while Saverin is among the most prominent figures in the global technology industry. Their involvement immediately elevates speculation about Liverpool’s long-term ambitions both on and off the pitch.
Amit Bhatia is expected to take on a direct role within the club’s leadership structure. Subject to regulatory approval, he will join Liverpool’s board and assume the position of vice-chairman, giving the new investors representation at the highest level of decision-making.
The deal also highlights the soaring value of elite football clubs. Industry estimates place Liverpool’s valuation at between £5 billion and £6 billion, reflecting the club’s commercial strength, global fanbase and continued success in domestic and European competitions.
For FSG, the agreement appears to represent a strategic partnership rather than an immediate exit. The American owners have spent years expanding Liverpool’s commercial reach and modernising infrastructure, and the latest investment could provide additional resources as the club seeks to maintain its position among football’s financial and sporting elite.
The arrival of investors linked to some of the biggest names in technology and global business is likely to fuel further interest in how Liverpool’s future ownership evolves, particularly with the possibility of a larger takeover remaining on the table.
