Several communities in Accra are set to experience power outages on Sunday, August 23, as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) carries out emergency repairs to replace a damaged transmission tower on the Tema–Achimota 161kV line at Ashaiman.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Accra West Region, announced the planned interruption in a public notice, saying the emergency works are necessary because of damage to the transmission infrastructure.
The exercise is scheduled to start at 3:00 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m., potentially disrupting electricity supply to homes, businesses, markets, offices and other facilities in several parts of the capital.
According to ECG, the transmission tower was damaged after a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being conducted on the tank within the transmission line’s Right-of-Way (RoW).
The incident affected a critical part of the high-voltage transmission network, prompting GRIDCo to undertake urgent replacement works.
ECG has listed two groups of communities expected to be affected by the exercise.
Affected areas – Group 1
Power interruptions are expected in Nima Township, Kanda Highway, Kanda Estate, Kokomlemle, Sulana, Circle, Madina Township, Okponglo, Cantonment, Osu Oxford Street, Mallam Atta Market, parts of Ridge, Labone, Kojo Sardine, Teshie Rasta Road and surrounding communities.
The affected areas include residential neighbourhoods, commercial centres and major roads, with both households and businesses likely to be impacted.
Affected areas – Group 2
The second group includes James Town, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Sempe, parts of Kaneshie, North Industrial Area, Okaishie, Agbogbloshie, Kantamanto, Adabraka, Ridge, Tesano, Santana Market, parts of Alajo, Malam Atta Market, Asylum Down and surrounding communities.
ECG has apologised to customers and the general public for the inconvenience the emergency works may cause.
The company has urged residents and businesses in the affected areas to take note of the scheduled outage and make the necessary preparations ahead of the exercise.
