Ghana to establish Diaspora Consular Fund for citizens in distress – Ablakwa
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced plans to establish a Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund to provide emergency assistance to citizens who encounter distress or crisis situations while abroad.
According to the Minister, the fund will operate as an emergency financing mechanism, allowing the government to quickly mobilise resources to support Ghanaians whose safety, security or welfare may be threatened in other countries.
Mr Ablakwa made the announcement while addressing the media on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks. He explained that the proposed fund would enhance Ghana’s ability to respond promptly to emergencies involving citizens overseas.
He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would soon launch the Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund to provide immediate financial support for Ghanaians facing difficult circumstances or crises anywhere in the world.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of Ghanaians, regardless of where they live, work or travel.
He stressed that the government would continue to take timely and decisive measures whenever the safety and security of Ghanaians abroad come under threat.
The announcement comes as authorities intensify efforts to evacuate and assist Ghanaians affected by the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
