Queiroz: Winning next game is Black Stars’ top priority in AFCON qualifiers

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has stressed that securing victory in their next match is Ghana’s immediate focus as they prepare to launch their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

Ghana will take on Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on Thursday in their opening Group C encounter before welcoming The Gambia to Accra on September 29.

Queiroz insists the team must concentrate on their first assignment rather than look too far ahead, as the Black Stars seek to return to the continental competition after missing out on the 2025 edition.

“There is always a new challenge. For me, the most important trophy at this moment is the next game, to win the next game,” Queiroz said.

“You cannot be on the top roof of Accra without climbing the steps of the building, and the steps for us now are to win the next game.”

Ghana’s preparations have been affected by injury concerns, with Mohammed Kudus and Nathaniel Adjei withdrawing from the squad.

Thomas Partey was also left out of the selection due to ongoing hamstring problems.

In response to the withdrawals, Alidu Seidu, Jonas Adjetey, Mohammed Fuseini and Brandon Thomas-Asante have been called up as replacements.

The Black Stars must first overcome the challenge of facing Côte d’Ivoire away in Bouaké before shifting their attention to The Gambia, as they begin their campaign to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON.
