Jay-Z rape accuser says her allegation was false
A woman who previously accused rapper Jay-Z of sexually assaulting her when she was 13 has formally withdrawn the allegation, stating that her claims were false.
The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, filed a lawsuit in 2024 alleging that she had been drugged and raped by Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, and Sean “Diddy” Combs at a party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
Both musicians denied the allegations, and the woman later withdrew the lawsuit in February 2025. Carter subsequently filed a lawsuit against her and the attorneys who represented her.
In a declaration filed in that case on Thursday, the woman, identified in court records as Jane Doe, said she had never met or spoken to Carter and that he had never behaved inappropriately toward her.
She also admitted that her claims that Carter and Combs raped her while another celebrity watched were untrue.
“I understand my false accusations have caused Mr Carter immense pain, suffering, and damage that can never be fully undone,” she said.
Jay-Z speaks about family’s trauma
Carter had strongly rejected the allegations, previously describing them as a blackmail attempt and calling them “frivolous, fictitious and appalling.”
After the woman abandoned her lawsuit in February 2025, Carter, who is married to singer Beyoncé, said the ordeal had caused lasting trauma to him, his wife, children and other loved ones.
The woman, who is from Alabama, has now been removed from Carter’s lawsuit.
In her latest declaration, she said she had not received money from Carter or anyone representing him and had not been compensated for making the statement.
Carter’s legal action against the woman’s former attorneys, including lawyer Tony Buzbee, remains ongoing.
Buzbee told Rolling Stone, which first reported the woman’s new declaration, that he had not seen the document.
He said several lawyers had dealt with the woman before she met him and that she had given each of them the same account. He added that her claim that she had lied to the lawyers and the court was new information to him.
When Carter sued the woman and her lawyers in February 2025, Buzbee alleged that Carter’s investigators had repeatedly harassed and threatened the woman in an effort to intimidate her into withdrawing her allegations.
In her latest declaration, however, the woman said she had never received any threats from Carter or anyone acting on his behalf.
Woman questions handling of original lawsuit
The woman said her allegations were triggered after she saw a Facebook advertisement in September or October 2024 seeking people who may have sexual assault claims against Combs.
According to her declaration, the advert brought back memories of an alleged rape when she was 13.
She said a law firm subsequently contacted her but did not show her a draft of the lawsuit before it was filed in October 2024, and that she had not authorised the document.
She further alleged that Buzbee and other lawyers representing her filed the case without conducting an independent investigation, background checks or due diligence, and without obtaining evidence to corroborate the allegations.
She described the claims in the October 2024 lawsuit — including the allegation that Carter and Combs assaulted her as a minor while another celebrity watched — as false.
Buzbee has also represented several other people who have made allegations against Combs.
Combs denied the woman’s allegations at the time, while his lawyer described the civil cases as being advanced by an attorney more interested in media attention than the legal merits of the claims.
The BBC has contacted Buzbee for a response.
In July 2025, Combs was convicted in a criminal case on prostitution-related charges involving two former girlfriends and is serving a four-year prison sentence.
