Olise’s late strike keeps France perfect under Zidane
France maintained their winning start under Zinedine Zidane after Michael Olise produced a moment of brilliance late on to secure a 1-0 Nations League victory over Belgium in Brussels.
With the match heading for a draw, the Bayern Munich winger collected the ball deep inside his own half in the 88th minute and embarked on a surging run before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper to separate the two sides.
The result gives Zidane back-to-back wins in his first two games in charge, despite making nine changes to the side that defeated Turkey and being without injured captain Kylian Mbappe.
France created enough chances to win earlier in the contest, with Desire Doue emerging as their most dangerous attacking threat. The forward came close on several occasions, including an effort that struck the crossbar, while debutant Lucas da Cunha also rattled the woodwork.
Belgium posed problems of their own through wingers Mika Godts and Dodi Lukebakio, but the hosts were unable to find a breakthrough against a youthful French defence.
Olise’s decisive intervention ultimately settled an entertaining encounter and lifted France to the top of Group A1 ahead of their next fixture against Italy. Belgium, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they face Turkey.
