The Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, has launched a nationwide sensitisation campaign and inter-school quiz competition aimed at improving second-cycle students’ understanding of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The initiative was launched on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Kintampo Senior High School in the Bono East Region. It will involve selected Category A, B and C Senior High Schools across the country.
The programme is being implemented by the NHIA’s Corporate Affairs Directorate in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) through the School Health Education Programme.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Bampoe said the initiative seeks to give students practical knowledge of the NHIS, including its policies, operations, digital platforms, benefits and the responsibilities of beneficiaries.
The sensitisation sessions will also educate students on NHIS services, primary healthcare, exemption policies and the different categories of beneficiaries who qualify for exemptions.
Dr Bampoe encouraged students to actively participate in the programme and use the knowledge gained to promote awareness of health insurance among their families and communities.
The Director of Corporate Affairs at the NHIA, Oswald Essuah-Mensah, said three schools from each of Ghana’s 16 regions would participate in the quiz competition, bringing the total number of participating schools to 48.
He explained that the competition would combine education with interaction and healthy rivalry, while helping students develop a better understanding of how the NHIS operates.
Following the launch, a sensitisation team led by Client Services Manager Dr Ruth Kukua Ntumy Coleman began a phased engagement with selected schools across the country.
The first phase covered five schools in the Bono and Bono East regions: Our Lady Providence Girls SHS, Koase Senior High School, Akumfi Ameyaw SHS, Kintampo SHS and Techiman SHS.
The exercise is scheduled to continue in the Ahafo Region on Wednesday, September 30, with engagements at OLA Girls SHS, Serwaa Kese SHS and Presbyterian SHS. Selected schools in the Ashanti Region will also be engaged on Friday, October 2.

As part of the programme, students will take part in interactive question-and-answer sessions and mock quiz competitions. Each participating school will select a three-member team to represent it in the main competition.
Key topics will include NHIS operations, digital registration through the MyNHIS App, mobile membership renewal via *929#, the NHIS benefit package, covered medical services, primary healthcare and beneficiary exemption categories.
The quiz competition will move from regional contests to inter-zonal rounds before culminating in a national grand finale and awards ceremony scheduled for November 26, 2026.
