A total of 7,163 delegates from across Ghana are expected to take part in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Congress and national officers’ elections on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The congress will be conducted in two sessions, with delegates expected to consider proposed changes to sections of the party’s constitution before electing national executives.
Proposed constitutional amendments
Sources cited by Citi News indicate that fewer than 20 constitutional amendments have been proposed. The proposals include some that were not adopted during the party’s last constitutional amendment conference in Accra in January 2026, as well as new issues that have emerged for further consideration.
One of the major proposals relates to the designation of the party’s leader. At its January 31 conference, the NPP introduced a provision stating that the National Chairman would serve as the party’s leader at all times.
Following subsequent deliberations, however, the party is proposing a revision that would instead recognise the party’s flagbearer as its leader.
Another proposed change concerns the election of Vice Chairpersons.
Under the existing arrangement, all candidates contest the position of National First Vice Chairman, while the candidates who receive the first, second and third-highest votes become the First, Second and Third Vice Chairpersons respectively.
The proposed amendment would require candidates to contest specifically for individual Vice Chairperson positions.
Delegates will also be asked to approve the appointment of three additional Vice Chairpersons who would not be elected.
Other proposed changes include the creation of Deputy Communications Officer positions and the elevation of the IT Officer role to an executive position.
Based on the procedure used at the party’s Legon conference, the Chairperson of the Constitutional Amendment Committee or a representative is expected to present the motions arising from the proposals before delegates vote by voice.
Delegate numbers
The election of national executives is expected to be the main focus of the congress, with 7,163 delegates eligible to vote.
The Ashanti Region has the largest delegation, with 1,122 delegates, followed by the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions with 773 and 732 delegates respectively.
The Savannah Region has the smallest delegation, with 184 delegates, while Western North has 223.
Of the total number of delegates, 2,745 are expected to participate in the Youth Organiser election, while 1,275 will vote in the Women’s Organiser race and 858 will participate in the election of the NASARA Organiser.
