The University of Ghana has postponed the reopening of the 2026/2027 academic year, which was originally scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2026, due to disruptions caused by the ongoing strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).
In a notice to students, university management said a new date for the start of the academic year would be communicated in due course.
Although the notice did not explicitly state the reason for the postponement, the decision follows earlier concerns by management that the GAUA strike was affecting essential administrative services and could disrupt the academic calendar if it continued.
The notice, signed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Gordon A. Awandare, urged students to remain patient and understanding while arrangements were made for the reopening.
Management also encouraged students to continue with their online academic registration to secure their places for classes and qualify for the upcoming random bed allocation exercise.
Students were further advised to follow the registration procedures outlined in an earlier university communication.
The postponement comes a day after the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) indefinitely postponed its reopening for the 2026/2027 academic year, citing the same strike and its impact on administrative operations.
At the University of Ghana, the industrial action has already disrupted first-semester registration and other administrative activities. Management had earlier suspended registration due to the strike.
