Former Education and Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has been named among the 100 Inspiring Individuals in Africa by the African Regional Journal.
The recognition, announced on Monday, October 26, 2026, under the African Regional Awards, features personalities from various professional fields, including public administration, business and institutional leadership.
The awards seek to celebrate individuals whose achievements inspire others and encourage greater involvement in Africa’s development.

NAPO’s inclusion on the list follows his career in Ghanaian public service, during which he served in two major ministerial positions under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He first served as Minister for Education before moving to the Ministry of Energy, where he was responsible for policy decisions in two key sectors of the Ghanaian economy.
Born on May 23, 1968, Dr Opoku Prempeh built his political career through parliamentary representation and subsequent ministerial appointments.
His parliamentary career began in 2008 when he was elected to represent his constituency on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He later strengthened his political position through successive electoral contests, including his re-election in 2016, when he secured 35,958 votes, representing 87.17 per cent of the valid votes cast, according to the publication.
In May 2017, former President Akufo-Addo nominated Dr Opoku Prempeh as one of 19 ministers to serve in his first Cabinet. The nominations were submitted to Parliament and announced by the then Speaker, Professor Mike Oquaye.
His appointment placed him among the President’s key advisers responsible for shaping government policies and coordinating the implementation of national priorities.
As Education Minister, NAPO oversaw a sector crucial to human capital development, skills training and preparing young people for Ghana’s social and economic future.
He subsequently took charge of the Energy Ministry, where his responsibilities included issues relating to electricity generation and supply, energy security and the development of the country’s energy industry.
His tenure in both ministries exposed him to different aspects of national governance, spanning education policy and energy management.
According to the African Regional Journal, the African Regional Awards aim to educate, inspire and motivate people to contribute to the continent’s development.
The publication identifies self-confidence, faith in others and the ability to motivate people to improve themselves and pursue greater achievements as key qualities of inspiring individuals.
Its selection criteria reportedly include developmental impact, governance, transparency and accountability, as well as creativity and innovation. These areas are intended to assess the contributions and influence of individuals across different sectors.
Dr Opoku Prempeh was listed under the Minister of Energy category alongside business leaders, public officials and institutional heads from various African countries.
His selection places him among personalities chosen by the publication for recognition under the awards programme.
The recognition also highlights the role of public officials in advancing national development through leadership, policymaking and institutional management.
Education and energy remain critical to Ghana’s development. While education supports human capital development, a reliable energy supply is essential for industrial expansion, commercial activities and the delivery of public services.
Leadership in both sectors requires strategic decision-making, accountability and coordination among various institutions.
Although the recognition draws attention to Dr Opoku Prempeh’s public service career and experience in the two sectors, the information provided by the publication does not identify specific projects or measurable achievements that informed his selection. Further details from the organisers would be needed to establish the exact reasons for his inclusion.
His appearance on the 100 Inspiring Individuals in Africa list places him among the personalities being recognised by the African Regional Journal for their profiles and contributions across the continent.
The African Regional Awards initiative aims to use the achievements of recognised individuals to inspire others to contribute to Africa’s development and strive for excellence in their respective fields.
