Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong will remain in Dutch custody after two attempts to secure his release on bail were rejected, with his extradition case in the Netherlands approaching a substantive hearing on November 18, 2026.
The latest update was disclosed by Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor during a parliamentary Leaders’ Media Briefing on Tuesday, November 3.
Dafeamekpor said the MP’s legal team had pursued two separate applications, including an initial bail request and an appeal, but neither succeeded.
He also dismissed reports that Frimpong had already been transferred to the United States, clarifying that the lawmaker remained in Amsterdam as the Dutch extradition proceedings continued.
“Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the extradition hearing, properly so-called, will take place on the 18th of this month, 18th November,” Dafeamekpor said.
Frimpong was arrested on May 10, 2026, at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport after arriving from Ghana. His detention followed an extradition request from the United States over allegations involving romance scams and money laundering.
The arrest prompted parliamentary and diplomatic engagements, with Parliament confirming his detention two days later and indicating that it was seeking information through Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa subsequently visited the detained legislator and confirmed that Ghana was providing consular assistance.
Frimpong’s legal team has previously challenged the circumstances surrounding his detention. His lawyer, Elvis Adu Ameyaw, argued that the warrant issued by a US magistrate court was intended to facilitate questioning and did not contain formal criminal charges against the MP.
The November 18 proceedings will focus on the US request to have Frimpong surrendered for legal proceedings there. They are separate from a criminal trial to determine whether he committed the alleged offences.
For now, the MP remains in the Netherlands, with the outcome of the extradition proceedings expected to determine whether he will be transferred to the United States to face the allegations or remain outside its jurisdiction.
