Pope Leo XIV has arrived in Uruguay to begin a 12-day tour of South America, just three weeks after undergoing surgery for lung cancer.
The 71-year-old pontiff arrived in the country on Friday, with journalists travelling aboard the papal plane confirming his arrival.
Speaking to reporters during the flight from the Vatican, Pope Leo said he was in “fairly good shape” and “very happy” to be returning to South America, where he spent nearly 20 years serving as a missionary.
“I know some people were doubtful about this trip taking place,” he said, adding that he had been confident the visit would go ahead.
The trip marks the start of a 12-day tour across the continent, giving the Pope an opportunity to reconnect with a region where he spent a significant part of his missionary life.
