The Supreme Court of Ghana is set to deliver its final verdict on the legitimacy of the vacancy of the four parliamentary seats today, Monday, November 11, 2024.
The members of parliament in the case include the MP for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison, the MP for Suhum Kojo Asante, Fomena MP Andrew Asiamah, and Amenfi Central MP Kwakye Ackah. The National Democratic Congress petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Alban Bagbin, to declare these seats vacant, given that these parliamentary members filed to contest as independent candidates in the upcoming December 7 elections.

The majority leader, Honourable Alexander Afenyo-Markin (NPP), filed a case with the Supreme Court to prevent the removal of these MPs from parliament.

In previous sessions, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo instructed Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to present relevant documents by Wednesday, November 6, after Thaddeus Sory, the Speaker’s lawyer, asked for more time to consult with the Speaker and gather necessary instructions.
Attorney General Godfred Dame has argued that the Speaker of Parliament should be excluded from the proceedings, given that his office represents public servants in cases concerning constitutional interpretation.
The Attorney General Godfred Dame, appealed to the court to proceed with interpreting the constitutional aspects of the case without the Speaker’s involvement.
