All presidential candidates in the upcoming elections or their representatives have signed a peace pact committing themselves to working towards ensuring peaceful elections.
The NDC which had threatened not to sign the pact were represented by their Presidential Candidate and former president, John Mahama who said his party was prepared to stand for peace.
Other key stakeholders present at the ceremony, which was held at the Kempinski Hotel yesterday, were the Vice President and Candidate for the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Chief Justice, Mrs Gertrude Torkornoo, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Akuffo Dampare, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Ms. Jean Mensa, the Chairman of the Natinal Peace Council, Rev Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi and the National Chief Imam, Osmanu Nuhu Sharabutu.
The Vice President also expressed the commitment of the government and the NPP to ensuring peaceful election and expressed confidence that the country would emerge victorious by having a very peaceful election.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Akuffo Dampare said, the Police would uphold high professional standards to ensure a very peaceful election and affirmed that they would not be the source of any actions that would disturb the peace and security of the country.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Ms. Jean Mensa for her part said, the signing of the peace pact by the candidates was a critical milestone that affirmed the commitment of the political parties to ensuring peaceful elections.
The Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev Adu-Gyamfi said the pact should not only be symbolic but should represent a genuine commitment by the parties to uphold the peace and security of the country even after the announcement of the election results.
