Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul
Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul has stated that the government should not be held responsible for security lapses during the 2024 general elections.
Addressing Parliament on Monday, December 16, Mr. Nitiwul emphasized that responsibility lies with the National Elections Security Task Force, which was led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. The Task Force was tasked with ensuring security during the electoral process.
His comments followed concerns from the Minority over the deaths of two individuals during the polls. Mr. Nitiwul stressed that questions regarding election-related incidents should be directed to the Task Force, not the government.
“On the day and after elections, it was the National Elections Security Task Force, led by the Inspector General of Police, that was in charge of security,” Mr. Nitiwul said.
“If the Speaker or the House wants to call for a briefing, it cannot be ministers or government appointees because they had no role.” He added.
He further justified this arrangement, explaining, “It was good that the Executive was not in charge of security. You cannot be a judge of your own court. It is wrong.”
The 2024 elections witnessed widespread violence and security breaches, sparking concerns over voter safety and the credibility of the polls. Tensions were further heightened by allegations of misconduct involving individuals in military uniforms at polling stations.
