Elikplim Akurugu declared winner of Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat

In a groundbreaking result, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been officially declared the Member of Parliament-elect for Dome Kwabenya. The Electoral Commission (EC) announced the outcome on December 31, 2024, following a thorough re-collation of votes from the fiercely contested December 7 elections.

Elikplim Akurugu secured victory with 50,967 votes, narrowly edging out her closest rival, Mike Oquaye Junior of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 50,669 votes. This win marks a significant political shift, as Dome Kwabenya has long been considered a stronghold of the NPP.

The election process in the constituency was fraught with tension, with allegations of discrepancies leading to heightened scrutiny. The EC’s final declaration puts an end to weeks of uncertainty and confirms Ms. Akurugu as the first NDC candidate to win the Dome Kwabenya seat in the constituency’s history.

Speaking after her victory, Ms. Akurugu expressed gratitude to her supporters and promised to serve the people of Dome Kwabenya with dedication and transparency. “This is a victory for the people.
