Calm has been restored in Ntotroso, Ahafo Region, following a deadly confrontation at the Newmont mining site on Wednesday night, January 8, 2025.
The incident occurred when a group of individuals allegedly attempted to steal gold from the mining site. Police officers intervened to contain the situation, leading to the tragic deaths of three people and injuries to four others.
The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, worked closely with the Regional Police Command throughout the night, engaging community leaders and youth to de-escalate tensions and prevent reprisal attacks. Thanks to these efforts, peace has been restored in the area.
To ensure a thorough investigation, a special team from Accra has been dispatched to Ntotroso, while additional police reinforcements have been deployed to maintain law and order.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that the deceased individuals are Muslims, and arrangements have been made to release their bodies to their families for burial later today, January 9, 2025.
The police have called for public calm and cooperation as investigations into the incident continue.
