Alban Bagbin promises to ensure the approval of anti-LGBTQ bill

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declared that he is ready to put his life on the line to ensure the contentious Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, is passed into law this year.

Speaking to traditional leaders and National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters on January 26, Bagbin declared his unwavering determination to uphold Ghana’s cultural and moral values.

“I can lose my life for this cause,” he boldly stated.

The bill, which expired with the 8th Parliament in 2024 after failing to receive presidential assent, remains a polarizing topic. Bagbin criticized the former president’s refusal to approve it, calling the move unconstitutional and claiming it ignored Parliament’s authority.

“Parliament is the authority for passing laws, not the president. That decision was wrong, and all of you punished him for that,” he said.

Bagbin also mentioned his plans to consult with the new Attorney General and resubmit the bill to the current president for assent. He assured supporters the process would be swift.

“This will not take time. It will be passed this year. It is ungodly, and nobody should joke with me on this,” he emphasized.

The Anti-LGBTQ Bill has divided public opinion, with proponents arguing it defends Ghana’s traditional values and critics warning of potential human rights violations.
