More than 381 diplomatic passports have been returned following a directive from the presidency aimed at enhancing accountability and ensuring proper management of these specialized travel documents.
The recall, issued by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, required all diplomatic and service passports issued under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to be returned. The directive officially expired on Friday, January 24, 2025.
Sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that most of the passports were submitted by Thursday, January 23, just a day before the deadline.
This initiative forms part of the current administration’s efforts to ensure that diplomatic passports are used solely to facilitate official duties. The recall was prompted by reports that some individuals who no longer serve in official capacities were still holding on to these passports, raising concerns about their potential misuse.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing stricter measures to prevent future misuse of diplomatic passports, emphasizing the importance of accountability in managing these travel documents.
