President John Dramani Mahama has expressed hope that Ghana’s national airline will return to the skies before the end of his tenure.
Speaking at the Russian University of Transport, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate, President Mahama said the government was working to revive the country’s national airline.
He made the remarks while highlighting ongoing investments in Ghana’s transport infrastructure, including port and airport expansions, the rehabilitation of major roads and the development of the railway network.
“New freight trains and the expansion of our railway network are also ongoing. And even as I speak, we are working on revamping our cherished national airline. It is my hope that before I leave office we will have Ghana Airways back in the air,” he said.
President Mahama described transport infrastructure as a key driver of national development, noting that efficient transport systems were essential for connecting communities, promoting trade and expanding access to economic opportunities.
He also urged Ghanaian and Russian educational institutions to strengthen their cooperation, particularly in transport engineering, railway development, logistics, road safety and traffic management.
According to him, such partnerships would help equip Ghana with the specialised expertise required to modernise its transport sector.
