The Agona West Municipality in Ghana’s Central Region is facing a serious cholera outbreak, with three confirmed deaths. As of January 25, 2025, a total of 214 suspected cases have been reported, with 11 confirmed cases at the Swedru Municipal Government Hospital.
The outbreak, which began earlier this month, has caused widespread concern, especially after the first fatality was recorded on January 2. Health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the disease.
The Ghana Health Service has stepped up efforts to contain the outbreak, focusing on education about sanitation and the importance of proper hygiene practices. Municipal health authorities are also conducting surveillance and providing treatment to those affected.
Residents have been advised to avoid consuming contaminated water and to seek medical attention immediately if they show symptoms of cholera, including severe diarrhea and vomiting.
This cholera outbreak highlights the importance of improving public health infrastructure and raising awareness about sanitation to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and work to ensure that additional cases do not arise.
