The New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced their withdrawal from all Media General (TV3, 3 FM, Onua FM) platforms with immediate effect.
In a press release dated Sunday, 26 January 2025, and signed by the party’s director of communications, Richard Ahiagbah, the party explained that their decision was influenced by their concerns of “biased and abusive moderation” from hosts of Media general.
“We announce that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) withdraws from all Media General platforms. This decision comes after months of engagement with the production team, hosts, and management of Media General to address concerns regarding unprofessional, biased, and abusive moderation by its hosts”, the statement read.
The statement further explained that the withdrawal was not the preferred solution, but was necessitated because Media General failed to address their concerns despite their discussions about their concerns.
“Despite repeated assurances since 2023, the observed misconduct and unfairness persist. Though withdrawal is not our preferred resort, we have been forced by the stance of the management of the media house to proceed in this direction,” the NPP press statement read.
The statement noted that Keminni Amanor, host of Hot Issues on TV3 allowed inflammatory remarks to be passed about ormer President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo .
“For instance, a regular guest known for making inflammatory remarks recently directed another insult towards former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on a programme hosted by Madam Keminni Amanor.
“Strangely, the host did not act to correct or object to this misconduct but merely laughed it off. The said remarks about the former president were unnecessary and in poor taste by any stretch of the imagination, yet the host condoned it,” Richard Ahiagbah stated in the release.
The NPP also registered their concerns about the paneling of shows on Media General platforms and the ability of the shows to skew narratives and shape perceptions.
“We are left confused about Media General’s endgame. Also, the TV3 political shows are characterized by biased paneling, where they assemble three or four persons whose political affiliation and orientation are publicly known to favor one party against a single representative from the NPP.
This screams, “We just need to tick a box,” and there is no genuine desire to hear the other side. Notwithstanding, we hope they will shed their current activist stance and work towards becoming a balanced platform that serves the information needs of Ghanaians rather than seeking to instruct Ghanaians on what to think and schemes to harass the NPP,” the press release concluded.
