The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has affirmed that it is fully equipped to support round-the-clock operations at the ports, according to Assistant Commissioner Theresa Potakey, the newly appointed Sector Commander of the Tema Collection at the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during a farewell ceremony for her predecessor, Assistant Commissioner Christiana Odi Adjei (Rtd.), Mrs. Potakey emphasized the Division’s commitment to a 24-hour operational framework that aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for a continuous economy.
“We have a 24-hour policy, and I am glad that the president is hammering on it. I believe that apart from MPS, which provides 24-hour services, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and other freight stations will adopt that as we have the men to do our work to support that”, she stated.
The Assistant Commissioner highlighted that the Tema sector is responsible for collecting over 80.5 percent of customs revenue, stressing that any shortfall in Tema impacts the entire customs system. As the new sector commander, she pledged to work towards exceeding their revenue targets.
In 2024, the Tema collection surpassed its target of GH¢33,925,850,000, achieving a total of GH¢36,857,370,000 by year-end.
She also committed to prioritizing the welfare of her officers and resolving any issues with stakeholders to ensure that revenue collection goals are met by the end of the year.
“We liaise with our stakeholders; I will intensify that and operate an open-door policy, ensuring that their issues are met. We know how to ensure that consignments are released without any delays. We have a backup always to ensure smooth service,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, former sector commander Assistant Commissioner Christiana Odi Adjei (Rtd.) expressed her confidence in Potakey’s ability to exceed set targets.
“I know what she can do and what she is capable of, so she is going to carry the mandate and make it roll even more, and even when she retires, I know that we have coached and mentored other people who can take up the mandate,” she said.
