President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr. Johnson Asiamah as the next Governor of the Bank of Ghana, pending approval by the Council of State. The announcement was made in a statement from the Presidency on Friday, January 31, 2025.
The nomination follows a formal request from the current Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, who has been granted leave ahead of his retirement on March 31, 2025.
Dr. Asiamah is no stranger to the Bank of Ghana, having previously served as Second Deputy Governor from 2016 to 2017. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton in the UK and has built a solid reputation in monetary policy, financial regulation, and economic research. With over 23 years of experience at the central bank, the Presidency highlighted his deep expertise in shaping Ghana’s financial landscape.
“Over the years, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing sound monetary and exchange rate policies, maintaining financial stability, and supporting Ghana’s economic growth,” the statement noted.
His nomination also comes shortly after the Attorney-General withdrew all charges against him related to the UniBank and UT Bank cases. Dr. Asiamah had been facing trial in connection with the collapse of the two banks, but a notice from the Director of Public Prosecutions confirmed that all charges had been dropped. While his case has been cleared, the trials of other individuals involved in the banking crisis are set to continue.
Dr. Asiamah’s appointment, if approved, will place him at the helm of Ghana’s financial system at a critical time, as the country navigates economic challenges and seeks to strengthen financial stability.
