National Security has discovered authentic Bank of Ghana (BoG) cash boxes at the center of a major counterfeiting operation in Sapeiman, raising concerns over the security of Ghana’s financial systems.
The operation, uncovered in February, was hidden behind a battery-charging shop run by an elderly man, known as the “Battery Doctor.” Investigators found ten 40-foot containers filled with counterfeit Ghana cedi, US dollar notes, and fake gold bars.
Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, confirmed that the recovered cash boxes were genuine BoG property. “These boxes are authentic, and authorities have verified them,” he said, highlighting the worrying possibility of insider involvement in the crime.
Two more containers, believed to be linked to the operation, were moved just before the raid. Investigators are now searching for a man known only as “Alhaji,” who is suspected to be the mastermind behind the operation.
National Security has vowed to increase financial surveillance and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
