The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition will soon present a policy to cabinet that aims to supply electric vehicles (EVs) to all government ministers. Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor made this announcement at the launch of a 60kW solar-powered EV charging station in Accra.
Jinapor said the policy will later extend to other government agencies to promote the wider use of EVs. He explained that the move is not only good for the environment but also makes economic sense.
“EVs cost less to operate than fossil fuel vehicles, which have more expensive engines and repair needs,” he said. He added that using EVs will cut operational costs for both public and private vehicle owners, lower transport fares and reduce the impact of fuel imports on the economy.
Jinapor said the government is committed to rolling out EV charging stations in key cities. This effort will be done in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and the Ghana Oil Company (GOIL), which is mainly state-owned. GOIL stations and major transport hubs will host the new charging points.
The launch of the solar charging station marks an important step in Ghana’s shift to cleaner transport, Jinapor stated. He called on transport operators, investors and other stakeholders to support the transition and help build the needed infrastructure.
“We need to work together to create the right conditions for EVs to grow. The government will support this effort through policies and incentives but the private sector must lead the investment,” he said.
Jinapor added that the Ministry is fully committed to clean energy and sees the EV project as part of its strategy to meet climate goals, improve air quality and build a low-carbon economy.
The initiative is backed by strong partnerships, including the Energy Commission, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Environment and development partners.
Eunice Biritwum, the Acting CEO of the Energy Commission noted that the charging station project was led by the Commission in partnership with GIZ. She said the effort reflects their joint commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Dr Dirk Abmann, Country Director of GIZ Ghana stated that the partnership between Ghana and GIZ began 50 years ago and continues to grow.
