Three individuals have picked nomination forms to contest the upcoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia constituency.
The aspirants are former Member of Parliament Henry Boakye; Bernard Bediako Baidoo, who currently serves as the NDC’s Akwatia Constituency Secretary; and Erasmus Koney Ali.
According to party guidelines, all three — along with any other contenders who file nominations by the deadline on Wednesday, July 30 — will undergo vetting on Thursday, July 31. Balloting will take place immediately after the vetting process, with the primaries scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025.
The NDC is seeking to elect a new parliamentary candidate following the passing of the sitting MP, which has triggered a by-election in the constituency.
On the other hand, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reportedly settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu, Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company, as its candidate for the by-election.
The NPP’s choice followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, during which a consensus was reached to forgo internal primaries.
Meanwhile, rumours suggesting that the late MP’s widow, Mrs. Mavis Kumi, would be selected to contest the seat have been dismissed. Eastern Regional NPP Chairman, Jeff Konadu, described such claims as “false and misleading.”
