A 47-year-old man has been banned from attending any football match in the United Kingdom following his arrest for allegedly racially abusing Bournemouth and Ghana forward, Antoine Semenyo, during the Premier League’s opening weekend clash between Liverpool and Bournemouth at Anfield.
The incident took place in the 29th minute of the match on Friday, August 15, 2025, when Semenyo alerted the referee to the abuse from the stands. The game was briefly paused as officials dealt with the situation before allowing play to continue.
On Saturday, Merseyside Police confirmed the arrest of the suspect, a Liverpool resident whose identity has not been disclosed. He was detained on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offence.
As part of his conditional bail, the man has been barred from entering any UK stadium hosting a regulated football match and is also restricted from being within a one-mile radius of designated stadiums on matchdays.
The police added that investigations are ongoing and that they are working closely with Liverpool Football Club to gather more information on the case.
In a powerful social media post following the incident, Semenyo, 25, expressed gratitude for the widespread support he received.
“That night at Anfield will stay with me forever—not because of one person’s words, but because of how the entire football family stood together,” Semenyo wrote. “Thank you to my teammates, Liverpool players, the fans, and the officials. This is why I love the game.”
Despite the upsetting encounter, Semenyo went on to score twice in the second half, inspiring a spirited comeback from Bournemouth, who eventually lost 4-2 after trailing by two goals.
The Premier League confirmed that its on-field anti-discrimination protocol was followed during the match and stated that the matter would be fully investigated.
This incident comes in the wake of a similar case involving Tottenham Hotspur’s Mathys Tel, who was subjected to racist abuse online after missing a penalty in the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain just days earlier.
Merseyside Police reiterated on Monday, August 18, that their investigation into the Semenyo incident remains active.
