The Electoral Commission (EC) has set Tuesday, September 30, 2025 as the date for the parliamentary by-election for the Tamale Central constituency, following the death of the siting MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Hon. Murtala Mohammed died along with 7 others in a fatal military helicopter crash on August 6, rendering the seat vacant in accordance with provisions of the 1992 Constitution.
In a press release issued on August 19, the EC outlined the schedule for prospective candidates to file their nominations. The nomination period is set for September 8th to September 10th, 2025, at the Commission’s Tamale Metropolitan Office. Submissions will be accepted daily between 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Aspiring candidates are required to download their nomination forms from the EC’s official website, starting August 19th, until the final day of submission on September 10th.
The statement further noted that each candidate’s forms must be proposed and seconded by 2 registered voters and assented to by 18 other registered voters within the Tamale Central constituency.
The Commission has also specified the filing fee for the race, setting it at GH¢10,000 for most candidates, and at GH¢7,500 for female candidates and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
“All completed Nomination Forms are expected to be delivered in quadruplicate,” (four copies), and accompanied by two recent bust-sized photographs of the candidate.
The contest is expected to be among aspirants from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) recently announced on august 11 that it will not be participating in the contest, describing the prospect of a competitive election so soon after the fatal crash as “inhumane and unconscionable,” emphasizing its desire to avoid the “tension and acrimony often associated with the conduct of by-elections in the country.”
