The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a planned demonstration on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, to protest what it describes as “state-sponsored harassment” of its members by the Ghana Police Service.
The party’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, disclosed the decision in a Facebook post on Friday, September 12. According to him, the protest will begin at the Obra Spot in Accra and proceed to the Police Headquarters, starting at 6:00 a.m.
The move follows the remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the party, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC. An Accra Circuit Court ordered that he remain in custody for two weeks to allow prosecutors more time to complete investigations.
Abronye DC was first arrested on Monday, September 8, over what police described as “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.” He has since remained in detention.
“Tuesday, 23rd September, the National Youth Wing will organise a demo against the state-sponsored police harassment. From Obra Spot to police headquarters. 6 a.m. sharp!” Mustapha posted.
The planned protest comes at a time when other leading figures of the party are also facing legal troubles. The Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently under investigation for alleged fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. Several other party members have reportedly been arrested on different dates in connection with separate cases.
NPP’s youth leadership says the upcoming demonstration will attract a large turnout of supporters and will send a strong signal against what they believe are politically motivated actions by state institutions.
