NDC parliamentary candidate for the Tamale Central by-election, Prof. Alidu Seidu, has opened up on why he decided to step into frontline politics and contest the seat.
The Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana revealed that following the death of former MP Murtala Mohammed, several individuals approached him, insisting he was the best choice to represent the constituency.
According to him, after consultations and deep reflection, he decided to contest — a decision he says he does not regret.
“Yes, people met me and sold that idea to me… they had done a lot of consultations and my name kept coming up. I told them to give me time to think over it, and I concluded it was the best decision. I still don’t regret it,” Prof. Seidu said an an upcoming interview on TV3’s Hot Issues,
He added that politics offers him an opportunity to serve both his constituents and Ghana at large.
“I believe this is the beginning of more things to come in my quest to serve my constituency, my people, and the state as a whole,” he stressed.
Prof. Seidu, who was recently appointed Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission, emerged victorious in the NDC Tamale Central primaries on September 6, 2025.
He secured 840 votes out of 1,511 valid ballots, defeating 11 other contenders in a hotly contested race. His closest challenger, former Tamale Mayor Abdul Hanan Gundadoo, garnered 536 votes, while the rest shared the remaining ballots.
After being declared winner, he expressed gratitude to the party, delegates, and fellow aspirants for what he described as a clean and competitive contest.
