President John Dramani Mahama has announced Ghana’s full membership in the global Partnership for Information and Democracy, reinforcing the country’s dedication to promoting press freedom, transparency, and accountability.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the High-Level International Conference on Information Integrity and Independent Media in Paris, Mahama said Ghana’s participation reflects its commitment to safeguarding information integrity and supporting public-interest journalism.
He noted that the decision goes beyond symbolism, describing it as a tangible step toward protecting democracy and strengthening professional journalism across Africa. “We are translating shared ideals into action by supporting public-interest media and safeguarding information integrity,” Mahama stated.
The Partnership for Information and Democracy brings together governments, media organisations, and civil society actors to promote independent journalism and tackle disinformation worldwide.
The Paris conference concluded with global pledges to raise €130 million between 2026 and 2028 through the International Fund for Public Interest Media, aimed at supporting struggling newsrooms and promoting trustworthy reporting.
Mahama urged other nations to follow Ghana’s lead, emphasising that sustaining democracy depends on collective efforts to uphold transparency, reliable information, and the integrity of public discourse.
