Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reaffirmed that his purpose for entering politics is to serve the people of Ghana and not to amass wealth or personal influence. Speaking during his four day campaign tour of the Western Region, the New Patriotic Party flagbearer hopeful said his political journey has always been guided by honesty, efficiency and accountability in the use of public resources.
Addressing party supporters in Amenfi West, Dr Bawumia reflected on one of his proudest achievements, the mobile money interoperability project, which he described as an example of how leadership can achieve more with less. He recounted that the same project had earlier been proposed by the opposition with a contract valued at about 1.2 billion US dollars, but when he took over, he cancelled it and successfully implemented the initiative for under 5 million US dollars. According to him, the project has transformed Ghana’s financial landscape by making transactions easier, boosting financial inclusion and creating job opportunities across the country.
“When I see lives changing, when I see young people getting opportunities and when I see systems becoming more efficient, that is what gives me joy. I entered politics to serve the people, not to enrich myself,” he said.
Dr Bawumia also spoke about the importance of transparency and digitalisation in governance, emphasising that his focus is on using technology to reduce corruption, make government processes more efficient and improve service delivery. He said his record in implementing systems such as the Ghana Card, the digital property address system and the paperless port process shows his commitment to building a modern and accountable public sector.
He urged delegates and party members across the region to support his bid to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections, assuring them that his leadership will prioritise service, innovation and opportunities for all Ghanaians.
“My vision is not about self enrichment. It is about a Ghana that works for everyone, where young people can find decent jobs, businesses can thrive and government institutions can serve citizens with dignity,” he told the cheering crowd.
He concluded his address by reminding supporters that true leadership is measured not by personal gain but by the positive difference made in the lives of others.
