The Ministry of Interior has revealed that Ghana recorded fifteen deaths and forty injuries from election-related violence during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
According to the Ministry’s Special Briefing on the outcome of Investigations into the 2020 and 2024 Electoral Violence, the 2020 elections recorded 8 death and 34 injuries, while the 2024 elections saw 7 deaths and 6 injuries.
The report provided a constituency-by-constituency breakdown of incidents that marred two consecutive electoral cycles, with election-related violence during the 2020 election concentrated in the country’s urban centers.
The Greater Accra region topped the chart for deaths and injuries during the 2020 election, with Odododiodio constituency recording 2 deaths and 15 injuries, the highest casualty-count for any single constituency. The Ablekuma Central constituency reported 1 death and 4 injuries.
Techiman South in the Bono East region, a historically contentious constituency, recorded 2 deaths and 9 injuries, becoming a flashpoint in in the 2024 elections.
Other affected constituencies in 2020 included Banda in the Bono region with 1 death, 2 injuries, Dormaa West (Bono region): 1 death, 1 injury, and Savelugu (Northern region): 1 death, 3 injuries
The report further highlighted that the 2024 elections saw violence spread across six different regions compared to four in 2020.
Documented cases from the 2024 cycle included Offinso North in the Ashanti Region which recorded 2 deaths and 2 injuries, Ahafo Ano South-West (Ashanti Region): 1 death and 3 injuries, Awutu Senya East (Central Region): 1 death and 1 injured, and a death each recorded in the Tolon (Northern region), Damango (Savannah region), and Nkoranza South (Bono East region).
