An overnight fire at Dansoman claimed the life of an 8‑year‑old girl and destroyed several wooden structures and shops, according to an official update from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The blaze reportedly began around 00:02 hours, and the Dansoman Fire Station arrived on the scene within two minutes. However, due to the intensity of the situation, firefighters immediately called for reinforcements.
According to MyJoyOnline, eight additional fire engines were dispatched from stations including Industrial Area, Ministries, National Headquarters, Madina, Weija, Anyaa, and Accra City. In addition, two water tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly supported the operation.
By 01:51 hours, the GNFS had successfully confined the fire, and by 03:03 hours it was fully under control. Firefighters attacked the flames from multiple directions to prevent them from spreading across the market. Once the blaze was subdued, crews began overhauling operations to eliminate remaining hotspots.
Tragically, during the incident, an 8-year-old girl became trapped inside one of the affected shops. Despite rescue attempts, she could not be saved and lost her life in the fire. Her remains were later handed over to the Police for further examination.
Although many structures were destroyed, firefighters managed to save several adjoining shops and their contents. Authorities have since confirmed that the market area is fully secured, though assessments of the damage are still ongoing.
The GNFS has launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire, which remains unknown at this time.
