On Monday morning, students and teachers of the Mpintsin AME Zion School in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Western Region, were confronted with a disturbing scene inside one of the classrooms.
According to reports gathered by Connect FM, an unidentified person broke into the Junior High School Two B (JHS 2B) classroom overnight and defecated inside. Shockingly, the individual used the faeces to inscribe the name of the local Assembly Member, who is also a former teacher of the school, on the classroom whiteboard.
The message left behind read: “ACOSA bra betsi,” which translates as “ACOSA, come and clean it.” This act has provoked widespread outrage and embarrassment among the school community, residents, and even the local chief.
As a result, teachers at the school immediately embarked on a sit-down strike, declaring that they would not resume teaching until the classroom was thoroughly cleaned. Speaking anonymously to Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show, one of the teachers emphasized that staff would only return once the necessary sanitation works in the affected classroom had been completed.
“Teachers in the school are currently on a sit-down strike. We are registering our anger towards the incident. Yesterday, we had a meeting with the Mpintsin chief together with the School Improvement and Support Officer. The chief made a promise to change the marker board and paint the entire classroom. He has brought a paint and a new board to be installed. We are still on sit-down strike as teachers. We shall only go back until the situation is fully addressed. The community has also promised to employ a security for the school,” he said.
Meanwhile, investigations are underway to identify the individual responsible for the incident. In response, the Assembly Member for the area, John Johnson, popularly known as ACOSA, expressed regret over the development and suggested that it was orchestrated by detractors.
“I understand what is happening, it’s part of our society. It is someone who wants to tarnish my hard earned reputation who is behind this. But this will not destruct me, it will rather motivate me to do more for the community,” he stated.
