The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Select Committee on Defence and Interior, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being responsible for the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of all eight individual on board including the Ministers of Defence and Environment.
According to him, the crash could have been prevented if the NDC had not opposed the acquisition of a new presidential jet and additional helicopters for the Ghana Armed Forces during the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.
Appearing on Adom TV’s Badwam on Monday, December 8, the Assin South MP claimed that the NDC’s resistance in Parliament blocked some critical investments that could have enhanced the military, pointing out the current challenges facing the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly the lack of operational aircraft.
“The Army has no well-functioning helicopter. Their equipment situation is worrying,” he said “This is what happens when politics is placed above national security.”
Meanwhile, Parliament recently approved a $60 million agreement between the Ministry of Defence and Dassault Aviation for the acquisition of a Falcon 6X aircraft for the Ghana Air Force, alongside a €125 million agreement with Airbus Helicopters SAS for the supply of one H160 and three H175 helicopters for the Air Force.
