The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has announced plans to transform Accra’s Geese Park into a modern conference centre under the government’s wider tourism and heritage development programme.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, December 15, she said the move represents a departure from the previous administration’s proposal to keep the site solely as a recreational park. While earlier plans focused on creating a leisure space with geese, the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has chosen to put the land to what it considers a more strategic use.
Maame Efua Houadjeto noted that the redevelopment is part of the broader Heritage Village initiative being led by actor and entrepreneur Idris Elba, to whom the entire area has been allocated.
She also pointed out that Ghana’s existing International Conference Centre is structurally inadequate, requires major refurbishment, and has a limited capacity of about 1,500 seats, making it unsuitable for large-scale international events.
Explaining the decision, she said the former administration envisioned the area as a relaxation park, but the NDC plans to replace it with a state-of-the-art conference facility. She added that as part of the Heritage Village project, a new conference centre is essential, especially given the shortcomings of the current facility. According to her, Geese Park is a prime, tier-one property that can be better utilised for this purpose, allowing the existing conference centre to be closed for renovations.
She emphasized that the redevelopment supports Ghana’s goal of establishing itself as a top destination for conferences, cultural tourism, and major international business events.
