The long-running Bawku conflict could be approaching a turning point following the release of key findings from the peace mediation led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The mediation report, compiled after months of consultations with traditional authorities and other stakeholders, affirms that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the lawful chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area. The findings emphasize that respect for existing legal and traditional rulings is crucial to achieving lasting peace in Bawku.
According to the report, continued disagreement over chieftaincy authority remains at the heart of the conflict. Otumfuo’s mediation team notes that any sustainable resolution must be anchored in the rule of law, dialogue, and the willingness of all parties to accept established decisions.
President John Dramani Mahama, after being briefed on the findings, appealed for calm and restraint among residents, particularly the youth. He stressed that the report should serve as a foundation for reconciliation rather than a trigger for renewed tension.
The President assured that the government will carefully study the recommendations and engage all relevant stakeholders to ensure their smooth implementation, describing peace in Bawku as a matter of national priority.
The report’s findings are expected to shape the next phase of peacebuilding efforts, as attention now shifts from mediation to acceptance, cooperation, and long-term stability in the region.
