Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho‑Tamakloe, has criticized the party’s decision to initiate disciplinary steps to expel former Environment Minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong‑Boateng over his “fake party” comments earlier this week.
According to him, the move could deepen divisions at a time the party should be rebuilding after an election setback.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, on Tuesday, January 12, Nyaho‑Tamakloe described Prof. Frimpong‑Boateng as an experienced figure whose statements should not be dismissed lightly, and argued that the party should have opted for engagement rather than rushing to punitive action.
“I would say it is very unfortunate in the sense that if we had an executive leadership as we had years ago, the step taken today would have never been taken…Prof. Frimpong-Boateng is a gentle person, he is very knowledgeable and I’m sure he chose his words very carefully,” he said.
He cautioned that how the matter is handled could “disperse party members,” urging the leadership to focus on reorganizing and correcting mistakes before escalating internal conflict.
“What they should have done is to invite him for a chat, but the way the leadership is handling this, if we don’t take care we will disperse the party members,” he warned.
Meanwhile, Nyaho‑Tamakloe had earlier challenged the NPP to also expel him if they succeed in expelling Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, arguing that the former Ministermerely voiced concerns that many grassroots members share.
During an appearance on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday. January 12, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng stated that “the present NPP is not NPP. It is fake. From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,” adding that he does not associate with the current version of the party but the “real, virtual NPP with its members in the background.”
“Look at how they elected their last flagbearer, twist people’s arms, bribing delegates and intimidating others to get a flagbearer. This is a beginning of corruption. This should not be allowed in any serious institution or any serious party,” he stated.
He linked these internal challenges to the party’s poor performance in the December 2024 elections, arguing that the NPP had failed to properly address the issues that led to its defeat.
“We lost the elections badly and we do not deal with the issues that led to the losses and we still want to go in there and I think it will be a trainwreck if they elect the old flagbearer,” he said
These comments prompted a swift response from the party which “unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong Boateng’s unfortunate characterization of the NPP and firmly denies his baseless and unsubstantiated allegations regarding the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Primary,” consequently invoking the relevant provisions of its constitution in his expulsion process.
