The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has expressed worry over what he terms as discipline and leadership issues withing the party.
According to him, the current NPP needs a strong leadership capable of managing the challenges caused by some members who do not follow the party’s guidelines.
During an appearance on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Thursday, January 29, ahead of the party’s presidential primaries on January 31, NAPO stressed that unity within the NPP is key to its “future victories,” warning that individuals who do not act in the interest of the party will be subjected to its regulations.
“There is no discipline in the party, you can see that, there have been several instances where certain members of the party had to be referred to the disciplinary committee because of some comments and I’ve heard a lot of people disagree with this disciplinary committee thing because they argue that we need people in the party,” he said.
“No individual is bigger than the party, many of the top figures owe their political standing to the NPP, so why not make sure that all your actions will protect the party’s integrity and collective image,” added.
NAPO further explained that following the defeat in December 2024, the NPP embarked on a nationwide tour to consult party members and relevant stakeholders. This, he said, led to some amendments to the party’s constitution and the decision to elect party executives through the “top-down approach.”
“We did our due diligence after the 2024 elections and that is why we amended our constitution, now the next step after electing the flagbearer will be to elect all the other executives so that we will have a complete leadership that can answer to the government of the day, there is currently no leadership and discipline so you even have some prominent party members attacking other members,
“Unity, discipline, and respect for party structures are essential if the NPP is to move forward and remain a strong political force,” he noted.
