The Ashanti Regional Police Command has retrieved 942 unauthorised ballot papers from an uncompleted building in Aburaso, raising fresh concerns ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries being held today.
Police say that 609 of the papers had already been thumb-printed, while 333 remained unused. The materials were discovered in a sealed box inside the building after a tip-off prompted a search by officers.
The papers have been secured and transferred to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department for forensic analysis as police investigate how they came to be stored in Aburaso and whether anyone attempted to manipulate the voting process.
The primaries, which will determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, involve tens of thousands of delegates across the Ashanti Region. Security agencies have been on high alert to ensure a transparent and peaceful voting process.
Party officials and the police have appealed for calm, stressing that investigations will continue without affecting the voting exercise, but the discovery has already heightened tensions and sparked debate about the handling and security of election materials.
